Amid a rise in the number of complaints of illegal parking in the city, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has launched a mobile application to check the problem.
“The application is developed using the latest technology to identify wrongly parked vehicles. The number, image, and GPS location of the defaulting vehicle will be shared with the municipality as well as the Transport Department through the application,” said an official.
Thereafter, the vehicle owners will be informed about the penalty through a message on their mobile phone. The penalty for illegal parking is Rs 1,000.
“The problem of illegal parking has grown manifold in the past two years. We have identified several illegal-parking hotspots,” the official added.
Some of the worst-affected areas when it comes to wrong parking are Burrabazar, Strand Road, BBD Bag, Esplanade, Chandni Chowk, Rabindra Sarani, Bidhan Sarani, Chittaranjan Avenue, AJC Bose Road, College Street, Surjya Sen Street, Kidderpore, Behala, Bhowanipore, Tollygunge, Gariahat, Lake Gardens and Jadavpur.
