KKR rope in Rana, question mark over Ponting

With captain Sourav Ganguly and technical director John Buchanan giving the practice session a miss, the concluding day of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) three-day selection trials appeared aimless today. Buchanan skipped the session owing to personal reasons, while Ganguly couldn’t turn up due to his father’s illness.

Rana gets the nod
The players went through the paces under the watchful eyes of the coach Brad Murphy. The KKR management has roped in Gujarat off spinner Manish Parmar and Haryana batsman Sachin Rana. The fate of the others will be decided by a teleconference between the technical director and the captain.

Ashaduddin satisfied
He was the cynosure of all eyes during this three-day camp. Mohammad Azharuddin’s son Ashauddin has thoroughly enjoyed this experience. “I have learnt a lot in the last three days. I have got tips from Ganguly and Buchanan which will definitely help me in future. With so many cricketers around, the competition would be tough. I have given my 100 per cent and am not expecting anything. At present,my primary target is to represent Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy,” he said. He added that he was told by his father to play positive cricket.

What about Ponting?
Meanwhile, the rumours were rife that the KKR management has decided to sale Ricky Ponting. But KKR’s chief executive officer Joy Bhattachrya said that they have no such plans at the moment. About Shoaib Akhtar,he said: “We have to wait and watch. Let us see if the Pakistan squash team gets the clearance to come to India. Only then we will be able to understand the situation. We will take a final call during our next camp in February.”

It is,however, learnt that the KKR management has decideed to part company with the Pakistan speedster.

Focus on batting
The KKR team management appears to be concerned about batting — an area that let the side down last year. This is the precise reason why Buchanan & Co want to have some bits-and-pieces players in the team who would be handy in this format.
