Facing criticism over the absence of a full-time vice-chancellor at Jadavpur University (JU), where a first-year student died after allegedly falling from the hostel building last week, Governor CV Ananda Bose on Thursday convened a meeting of court members of the university at Raj Bhavan. Bose as Governor is the chancellor of all the state universities, including JU.

During the two-hour-long meeting, which was attended by JU’s pro-vice-chancellor Amitava Dutta, registrar Snehamanju Bose, heads of various departments and other faculty members, the Governor reportedly assured them that he will be appointing an acting vice-chancellor for the university soon.

“The Governor assured that he will be appointing a vice-chancellor for the university soon. During the discussion, JU faculty members pitched a proposal that security arrangements can be handed over to ex-servicemen,” said a source.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, JU’s computer science department head Nandini Mukhopadhyay said, “We do not have a permanent vice-chancellor. Several posts are also vacant. There were discussions about quick recruitment and security safeguards.”

Meanwhile, state Education Minister Bratya Basu, who met the dead student’s family in Nadia,  said the Governor should answer why the anti-ragging law has not been implemented at the university. “The Raghavan Committee report came in 2002 and the Supreme Court’s direction came in 2009… How can we answer why the anti-ragging law was not implemented?.. Today, someone is trying to take control of the universities from Governor’s House with the help of the BJP. You should ask him why is he calling a court meeting illegally with the university staff today at his residence,” Basu     told mediaperson s in Nadia.
