In a stern message Governor K N Tripathi Saturday asked Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty to take “immediate” action on a report relating to a molestation case in the campus. He also expressed concern over the condition of some students who are on fast demanding Chakraborty’s resignation.
“The Governor has cautioned the Vice-Chancellor for the delay in taking action on the report relating to the molestation case and asked him to take immediate action as per law,” a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan said.
Urging some JU students, who are on a fast-unto-death, to end their strike the Governor “asked Education Minister Partha Chatterjee to take care of the students’ health and afford all the necessary facilities in this connection”.
Eleven students of the university are on a hunger strike since January 5 demanding the V-C’s resignation. Two of them, including third year engineering student Shivam Ghosh, was admitted to a private hospital after their blood sugar and BP fell sharply.
Chatterjee, who met the students today, said, “I am trying my best to address their grievances. I have submitted a report to the Chief Minister in this regard”.
The students want the Vice-Chancellor to go for ordering a police crackdown on them during a ‘gherao’ on the night of September 17. Significantly, in another development, the parents of the fasting students said that they too would go on hunger strike if their children continued to fast.
