‘Jilted’ lover attacks girl with razor

A 28-year-old man attacked a girl in her teens who he claimed to be his former girlfriend with a razor in south Kolkata on Valentine’s Day on Tuesday. In another incident,a woman said to be feeling betrayed by her lover jumped off from a bridge in Howrah in a bid to kill herself.

Rajat Barik,a resident of Mullickpara in Baruipur,attacked the girl near Avishikta Apartment in Kalikapur when she was taking an autorickshaw. Barik sat beside her in the auto and slashed her right hand with a razor. A co-passenger was also injured in the incident. The victim was given seventeen stitches. She denied having any link with the man. Barik,however,said he had an affair with her and that she dumped him recently.

Police have started interrogation and found Barik’s phone number in the girl’s cellphone. Both used to work at a bag manufacturing work shop near Ruby Hospital.

Biswarup Ghosh deputy commissioner (south suburban division) said Barik will be produced before the city court Wednesday.

In another incident,a woman,in her early twenties,jumped off from Bankim Setu at Howrah in the afternoon. The Railway police rescued her and took her to the Howrah General Hospital. The woman is a resident of Shibpur.
