What steps have been taken against corporal punishment? HC asks govt
The Calcutta High on Friday sought to know what kind of the steps were taken against those teachers who were accused of corporal punishment recently. The Division Bench asked the counsel of the state government whether the government has taken any steps against the teachers or others accused of such acts. The Bench also asked the counsel to issue a publicity notice in the media to create awareness among students and teachers against corporal punishment in schools. Advocate Tarun Roy,counsel of the government,informed the court that the government has constituted state-level and district-level committees to prevent corporal punishment in schools.
Court questions CBI for displaying arrested mans name on Wanted List
The First Special Court (CBI) at Alipore on Friday wanted to know why the name of A N Ghosh,working as Honorary Consulate General of Vanuatu,is displayed as wanted on the CBI website. Krishna Ghosh,the judge of the CBI court,asked the investigating agency to file a report on the issue and the case will come up for hearing on January 10.
Ghosh faces prosecution in the court but the CBI continues to display his name as a wanted person by the agency. Advocate Subash Bhattacharya,counsel of Ghosh,said the CBI should remove his name as he faces the prosecution. Bhattacharya said how can CBI display a persons name as wanted when he is already released on bail and faces the prosecution. The CBI had filed chargesheet against Ghosh but the charge was not framed against him. An application for discharging Ghosh from the chargesheet came up for hearing today. The Interpol had arrested Ghosh on December 15,2002 at Munich in Germany according to Red Corner notice issued in June 2002. The CBI brought seven bank fraud cases against him on the basis of a complaint lodged by several banks including the Allahabad Bank.
After spending five years in jail,in Germany,Ghosh was extradited to India in August 2007. Ghosh was lodged in Alipore jail and released on bail according to an order passed by the Supreme Court on March 20,2009.
