Extended CAT will take pressure off centres
Taking a lesson from the technical glitches that hampered the smooth conduct of the Common Admission Test (CAT) last year,the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have decided to complete the entrance examination in 20 days and bring down the pressure on each examination centre. The organising committee said there would be fewer examination centres in each city. The test will be held for 20 days October 27 to November 24 and registration will begin from August 30. Last year,the examination was completed in 10 days but owing to technical glitches the last date was extended. The pressure on each testing site will be less. The number of the centers in each city would be about 80 this year, said Himanshu Rai,convenor of CAT organising committee.
IPS officers denied promotion: Govt to challenge CAT order
The West Bengal government will challenge the order of Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) that set aside the promotion of four IPS officers in the Calcutta High Court. We will move Calcutta High Court challenging the CAT order. It will take about 10-15 days to complete the process, said Home Secretary Samar Ghosh on Monday. The officers,whose promotions were set aside on August 19 include Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjees Security Director A K Maliwal,Special Commissioners of Kolkata Police R K Pachnanda and Banibrata Basu and Additional Director General of CID Raj Kanojia.The promotions granted on July 28,2009 were set aside by CAT on a petition filed by then IG Armed Police Anil Kumar and IG planning R J S Nalwa.
A cricket betting racket has been unearthed with the arrest of three persons on the outskirts of the city,police said. Acting on a tip off,a police team raided a hideout near a shopping mall in North 24-Parganas district and arrested them last night. They would be produced before a court.
Pilot who flew Sun Yat Sens wife and Sukarno dead
Captain Phanindranath Guha Roy,a pilot who had flown wife of Chinese revolutionary leader,Sun Yat Sen,and Indonesian President Sukarno died on Monday following illness.
Guha Roy was 88 and is survived by his wife and two sons. Widely known in civil aviation circles as Capt P N Roy,he was a fighter pilot of the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) who saw action during World War II. Seeking release from the Air Force after the War,he joined the national carrier Indian Airlines at its inception.
