For most of the 21st century,R&B-happy teens,Michael Jackson had been an image colossal, intriguing,a thing of the past. But his death, and the sudden rush of stories, recollections, anecdotes that seems to have overwhelmed the popular media is definitely showing on the music stores in the city. Most of these kids know little about MJs music. They have also heard very little of him. No wonder, there are several who have just been initiated to his music and are very curious, says Gautam Jatia of Starmark.
Their outlet at the South City mall alone has sold over 100 copies of MJs albums over the last week. The highest sellers have been compilations. The King of Pop,Michael Jackson Greatest,Thriller-The 25th Anniversary have sold really well. We have even ordered reprints, says Jatia.
Apart from albums, there seems to a posthumous interest in the pop icons music videos. DVDs of his music videos, the documentary Jackson made on the making of the groundbreaking Thriller video, has turned into collectors items almost overnight. There was not much interest. At least people were not buying them. But there seems to be a sudden demand of his music videos, says Nabanita Sarkar of the Music World,Park Street. In fact, outlets which didnt stock on his DVDs of Jacksons videos have placed bulk orders for them. There have been several enquiries if we are stocking any DVD which has the Thriller video, says a spokesperson for a Planet M outlet in the city. Confirms Jatia. DVDs which have grabs of his live gigs are hot sellers. Theres no better way than a video of live gigs, for getting to know the star, adds Jatia.
