Hooch tragedy PIL in HC

An advocate of the Calcutta High Court Wednesday filed a PIL challenging the compensation announced by the state government for the victims of the recent hooch tragedy in South 24 Parganas.

An advocate of the Calcutta High Court Wednesday filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the compensation announced by the state government for the victims of the recent hooch tragedy in South 24 Parganas.

The petition questioned the rationale behind the government’s move in announcing cash payment to the hooch victim families. The case will come up for hearing next Friday. Around 172 persons were killed after consuming illicit country liquor at Sangrampur and Maghrahat in December 2011 following which the state government announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the each of the victims’ families. Chittaranjan Panda,an advocate of the Calcutta High Court filed a PIL after mentioning the issue to the Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel.
