The Calcutta High Court today directed the state government to apprise the court of its stand on the recommendation made by the West Bengal Human Rights Commission in connection with the illegal arrest of Siladitya Chaudhury,a farmer form West Midnapore.
The rights panel had,in July this year, recommended the state government to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation amount to Chaudhury. Four months on,the compensation remains unpaid.
Chaudhury was branded a Maoist by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for questioning the price hike of fertilizers during a rally in Belpahari in August last year. He was later arrested by the police on the CMs order and questioned about his alleged involvement with the Maoists. The investigations, however, proved that the farmer did not have any connection with the Maoist outfit whatsoever.
The state human rights commission then took note of the matter and recommended the state government to compensate Chaudhury for all the troubles he had to face because of the illegal arrest. The matter then went to the High Court, which has now asked the state government to declare its stand on the recommendation.
