Governor Bose’s decision to appoint NSOU VC ruffles govt’s feathers
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Basu said, “I have received an order to exercise the powers and perform the duties of the vice-chancellor of the university. The order came from the chancellor and I will abide by it.”

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose’ recent announcement to appoint Chandan Basu as the acting vice-chancellor of Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) has not gone down well with the state government, sources said on Monday.
According to an official of the education department, the appointment was made without the knowledge of the state government. Although state education minister Bratya Basu did not respond to the development immediately, it was learnt that the state government was not happy with the decision.
NSOU has been facing a crisis over the five-year renewal of its 33 distance learning courses after former VC Ranjan Chakrabarti’s tenure ended on March 14. It was learnt that the state education department had sent some proposals regarding his successor to Raj Bhawan.
However, Bose, who is also the NSOU chancellor, issued an order on Friday which said, “Prof Chandan Basu is authorised to exercise the powers and perform the duties of the vice chancellor for Netaji Subhas Open University, Kolkata, till further orders.” On Sunday, four NSOU officials, including Basu and the university registrar met the Governor at Raj Bhavan. Sources said the governor wanted to understand the issues the open university was facing.
