Land Reforms Commissioner Amarendra Kumar Singh does not seem to have enough time for an important department like Land and Land Reforms. Singh,who handles two more posts — principal secretary in Animal Resources and Development Department,and commissioner of Jalpaiguri Division — spends a major time of his day at the offices of the ARD Department. Employees of Land and Land Reforms Department are seen carrying important files to the ARD Department for perusal. So why has Singh not been given the charge of only Land Reforms Commissioner like it used to be earlier? A senior official quipped: “Is it because there is not much work in the land department headed by the Chief Minister now?” Given the government’s hands-off policy on land acquisition,the question may ring true.

The half-day leave for government employees on the occasion of Jamai Shashti raised serious doubts over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s intentions of ushering in a new work culture in the government offices across the state. On the one hand,the Chief Minister vehemently opposes bandhs and strikes citing them to be “detrimental to a healthy work culture”; on the other,she allows government employees to head home early to celebrate Jamai Shashti — a ritual in Bengali households when the jamais or the grooms are feted by the family of their wives with an assortment of delicacies. In the last two years,since coming to power,Mamata has already increased the number of leaves during Durga Puja. Now,people are asking if she would order closure of the government offices on occasions like Itu Pujo,Chapra Shashti,Monosha Pujo as well. There is already a simmering discontent among employees regarding non-payment of DA that has been pending for the last one year. Most of the employees are of the opinion that if Mamata tries to make up for the non-payment of the DA by sanctioning more leaves then it would be a wrong strategy on her part.
