As a result, the party continues to show faith in Anubrata Mondal despite the leader being arrested in a cattle smuggling case. (Express Photo)CHIEF MINISTER Mamata Banerjee on Friday presided over a party meeting for its Birbhum district organisation at her residence in the city. While all eyes were on whether the party removes heavyweight leader Anubrata Mondal as its Birbhum district president, senior party leader Chandrima Bhattacharya said that no discussion was held on this. Mondal at present is lodged at Tihar Jail, New Delhi, in connection with his alleged involvement in a cattle smuggling scam.
“There was no reference on Anubrata Mondal during the meeting. It was not discussed at all. It has been said that the party collectively will monitor the organisation there. A core committee has been formed which will hold meetings every week. The district committee will hold a review meeting every month,” said Bhattacharya.

Sources, however, said state ministers Firhad Hakim, Moloy Ghatak and party MLA Narendranath Chakraborty will monitor the party organisation in Birbhum. Incidentally, all three leaders are based outside the district. It was also learnt that members at the core committee has been extended to nine. Sources said, Banerjee also reprimanded two of the core committee members including Kajal Sheikh for speaking against party leaders and asked everyone not to make anti-party statements.
Meanwhile, Bhattacharya announced that TMC workers will hold protest demonstrations in every block of the state against the Centre’s “decision to not release funds to the state for several social welfare schemes.”
“After the CM’s dharna slated for March 29, TMC workers will also hold protests across all blocks in the state to apprise people of the Centre’s stepmotherly attitude towards Bengal. Our National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee will also lead the protests by the Students and Youth Wing of the party on March 29,” she added.
The Rastashree scheme – announced during this year’s budget only a few weeks ago – will be inaugurated by Mamata Banerjee on March 28, under which the state government will build around 12,000 kms of rural roads for better connectivity.
