(Express photo by Partha Paul) In an apparent attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday urged the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) not to support the two in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as “they only brought upon doom to the country”.
Addressing Trinamool Congress workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata, Banerjee said, “I keep my eyes and ears open. When I went to attend a Chhath Puja, I saw an RSS camp there. If they take part in religious activities, I have no issues. But I have one request — don’t support the two people who have brought doom to the country. You have supported a lot of people on various occasions. I have nothing against you. But don’t support the two anymore.” Reiterating her allegation that attempts were being made to “saffronise” the country’s cricket team, the CM claimed that India would have won the cricket World Cup had the final match been played in Calcutta or Mumbai.
“They are trying to paint the entire country saffron. We are proud of our Indian players. They even tried to saffronise the team by introducing saffron jerseys. They wanted to change the blue jersey as well. But players resisted, and did not wear those jerseys during matches,” she said .
