CPM-Trinamool clashes leave six injured in Hooghly

Clashes have been continuing for a week between CPM and the Trinamool in Pursura block of Hoogly district over domination of the villages.

Clashes have been continuing for a week between CPM and the Trinamool in Pursura block of Hoogly district over domination of the villages.

On Friday, six persons ¿ including a child and her mother ¿ were injured when CPM men allegedly attacked the Gholdigrui village in Pursura block. All of them have been hospitalised. The Trinamool alleged that over 70 hired goons raided the village early in the morning and demanded that the villagers join the party rally in the evening.

When a family which supported the Trinamool protested, the CPM men attacked them. Tumpa Maity and her four-year-old daughter sustained critical injuries and have been admitted to a local hospital, said Tapan Dasgupta, the Trinamool district president.

Pursura is a traditional CPM stronghold. In 2008,the CPM won the panchayat samity elections with a huge margin.

But over the last one year,Trinamool established its base at Pursura. Now,the CPM is trying to recapture the villages using hired goons from West Midnapore’s Garbeta, said Dasgupta. Nearly 700 families, supporting Trinamool have been rendered homeless and took shelter in the camp,he added.

Sunil Sarkar,CPM district committee member of Hoogly, said 174 families supporting CPM had remained homeless for over a year. They cannot enter the villages in Pursura block and now, they had tried to stage a comeback with the help of others, said Sarkar.

Tanmoy Roychaudhury,Superintendent of Police,Hooghly, said senior officers have stayed back in Pursura and the situation will become normal soon.
