When Salim came out after filing his nomination papers,a loud applause greeted him. He stood up on the vehicle and waved the red flag,a practice not usually followed by CPM leaders in Bengal.

What followed was a speech delivered from the top of the vehicle, claiming that all the parties are anti-national,urging people to vote for him to free the country from the increasing dominance of America.

“It is not an election,it’s a battle against the American interest in West Asia. It is a battle against those who want to divide the state in Lalgarh and Hills,” Salim said in Bengali and Hindi, trying to connect with voters in the constituency.

Although the 51-year-old CPM leader declared he had no car,half-a-dozen vehicles carrying loads of CPM supporters accompanied him.
