(Express Photo) Two days after an elderly couple was beaten to death under suspicion of “practising witchcraft”, seven persons were arrested in connection with the killings in Birbhum district on Monday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Pandu Hembram and his wife Parvati, said police. The alleged incident took place in Napara village of Bharamkol panchayat in Amodpur area of Birbhum district.
Talking to The Indian Express, Birbhum District Superintendent of Police Bhaskar Mukherjee said, “The incident is under investigation. There are several factors which hint at personal enmity as the motive. So far, we have arrested seven persons including the main accused Rubai Besra. Three of the accused persons are in police custody.”
According to reports, on Saturday morning, a group of local villagers gathered outside Pandu’s house and called the couple outside.
“The villagers alleged that the couple was practising witchcraft and then beat them up. The injured couple were rushed to Bolpur sub-district hospital where they died during treatment the same day,” said police.
