A police officer was killed on duty by two criminals whom he had to gone to arrest in Uttar Chandpur in Malda on Saturday night. Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanat Ghosh (40) was accompanied by two constables who reportedly fled the scene when attacked,said a police officer.
After Ghosh arrested the duo,he was attacked from behind by the father of one of the criminals. He was attacked on the head with a sharp-edged weapon and later teh criminals family hurled bombs at the two constables who fled the spot,said the officer.
The local police arrived later only to find Ghosh lying in a pool of blood. He was taken to hospital where he died due to excessive bleeding.
He was a very able police officer and it is a very tragic incident. Ghosh was on duty and had gone to arrest a few criminals when he was killed, said Bhuban Mondol,SP,Malda.
The police also said that the family has a number of criminal charges against them,including the kidnapping of a boy in the Manikchowk area.
We had registered a case of kidnapping against them, said Mondol.
On learning of the ASIs death,the familys neighbours demolished their home. And while the other family members fled,Rima Khatun (15),a family member,could not escape.
She narrated the entire incident to the police and we have put her under court protection. We are investigating the case and have informed all police stations to keep a look out for the criminals, said Mondol,while adding that he would write to the state government to provide help to the ASIs family.
