CM in tight spot for using microphone

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee got embroiled himself in another controversy as he used microphones during several programmes he attended in Jadavdpur.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee got embroiled himself in another controversy as he used microphones during several programmes he attended today in Jadavdpur,South 24-Parganas,despite a ban on their use in open spaces as the board examination is underway.

The examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education started on February 23 and will continue till March 7. The Chief Minister was also aware that the use of microphones during the examination time was not proper. “I ask the person controlling the mike to lower the volume. There is no other alternative…. Madhyamik Examination is in progress. So I will speak softly,” he said at a programme at Panchsayar. Volumes were lowered after the CM’s instruction, but the sound box continued to blare.

The Chief Minister also attended two programmes at Patuli and Baghajatin where microphones were used, but the organisers had covered the venue with cloths around it. Biswajeet Mukherjee,Law Officer of West Bengal Pollution Control Board, said: “Since the matter has been brought to our notice,we would ask the police about the details.”

Even the Calcutta High Court on August 11,1998,had ruled against open air programmes in residential areas three days before the madhyamik and HS exams. “We are probing the incident and will take necessary legal actions,” said Siddhinath Gupta,Deputy Inspector General,PR,of West Bengal Police.

Earlier on February 20,three days before the madhyamik examinations started, loud speakers were used at a Trinamool Congress rally at Red Road, where the main speaker was Mamata Banerjee. Subsequently, officers of the Maidan Police station lodged an FIR under Section 188 of IPC.
