The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) on Friday held a protest rally in Jadavpur over the death of a first-year student at Jadavpur University (JU) after he was allegedly subjected to ragging by his seniors.

The rally that started from Golpark and culminated at the Jadavpur 8-B bus stand was attended by Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and BJYM president Indranil Khan among others.

Adressing the protesters, Adhikari said, “We came here to warn the ‘tukde tukde’ gangs, the anti-national forces. Maoism or Naxalism will not work here. Only nationalism will stay in Jadavpur, with the national flag flying high.”

In a purported video of the rally shared by the ruling Trinamool Congress on X (formerly Twitter), some participants were seen raising the slogan “Afzal ke yaaro ko, goli maro…” (shoot the friends of Afzal).

“We condemn such hooliganism & the sheer attempt to disrupt peace in Bengal,” the TMC posted.

MLA Agnimitra Paul said the main demand of the rally was the installation of CCTV cameras on the campus and severe punishment for all those involved in the death of the boy.

Earlier in the day, the BJP’s student wing, ABVP, also held a march in Jadavpur. The police, however, stopped the rally, claiming the outfit had no permission  to hold a procession.
