Mamata Banerjee
The West Bengal unit of BJP on Thursday hit the streets demanding an NIA investigation into the Burdwan blast case. Later in the day, the Home Ministry went ahead and handed over the probe to the agency.
Leading an impressive rally in Burdwan town, BJP state president Rahul Sinha accused the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government of shielding the perpetrators of the blast and “sinister” designs behind the bomb-making unit. The Trinamool government was trying to block NIA investigation into the blast, he alleged, adding that the Centre might itself ask the anti-terror probe agency to take up the case.
Two men, including a suspected Bangladeshi infiltrator, were killed and another injured while allegedly making bombs at a house there on October 2. Other senior BJP leaders said the Burdwan blast was a serious matter and suggested the Centre and the state should jointly move in this case instead of creating an atmosphere of confrontation. Siddharth Nath Singh, one of BJP’s national spokespersons, said, “All our apprehensions about West Bengal have come true.”
Talking to The Indian Express, Singh said the Burdwan incident “shows our stand on Bangaldeshi infiltrators crossing over to West Bengal and engaging in militant activities. There can not be a better example than this. Burdwan has proved all our charges right”.
“It is too serious a matter and the central government is taking strong steps in this matter,” he said.
Singh pointed out that BJP was on the same wave length with Trinamool Congress on opposing NCTC during the UPA-II rule. “There are obviously relevant issues of federal structure involved in the matter, but this is one incident which calls for an investigation by a central agency,” he said, and added, “the central government will certainly push the state government if it resisted such a proposition.”
Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy on Wednesday had held a rally in Burdwan and hit out at the BJP, saying, “The Trinamool Congress does not want to take a lesson on patriotism and nationalism from the BJP.”
On Thursday, another senior TMC leader Partha Chatterjee rejected the BJP allegations and said the state government has full confidence on the police. “The police have been doing a thorough job unfolding the crime plots and there was absolutely no need for any NIA investigation. The BJP along with Congress and CPI-M are trying to create disturbance across the state, he said.
