Continuing his attack on opposition leaders, Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee Sunday said members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were approaching him for help as they knew his party was the only one to “care about people’s issues”.

Banerjee was speaking during a public meeting organised at the Kaiti football ground in Raina area of Purba Bardhaman district during his Jana Sanjog Yatra, which entered its 20th day on Sunday.

“Today, I was going towards Raina from Jamalpur camp. It’s usually a 30-minute commute but it took me around two-and-a-half hours to reach because the road was packed with people. I spoke to many of them,” said Banerjee.
“A young man told me: Dada, I am a BJP functionary. We need a lamp post and street lights here. Will you arrange them? I told him to submit an application and that I will do what is within my jurisdiction. You see a BJP worker is not approaching Sukanta Majumdar (BJP state chief), Suvendu Adhhikari (BJP’s Nandigram MLA), Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah. BJP, RSS workers are coming to me for help because they know Trinamool Congress is the only party that truly cares for people’s issues,” the TMC leader said.

Referring to BJP’s loss in the Karnataka Assembly election, Banerjee said, “Fifteen days ago Amit Shah came to Bengal and said Didi will be voted out of power in 2025. Actually, it’s their ‘double engine’ government which has failed. They have been wiped out of south India. There is no BJP in the east either. The party has a presence only in the central and western India. It’s the beginning of their end, it’s just a matter of time,” said the Diamond Harbour MP.

Elections to the 224-member Karnataka Assembly were held on May 10. The Congress won 135 seats, while the ruling BJP secured 66 seats. He also alleged that the BJP-led Centre was withholding West Bengal’s share of funds for welfare schemes.

“Money for schemes like PM Awas Yojna, for road construction has been stopped (by the Centre). People do not know that the Prime Minister has declared war on Bengal after BJP’s defeat in the state.”

The state’s dues from the Centre are to the tune of Rs 1.15 lakh crore, he claimed.  He also warned that if the state government did not get its dues soon, he would sit in front of the Krishi Bhavan in protest.
