Taking part in the adjournment motion brought by the BJP on panchayat poll violence in the Assembly, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the main opposition party of “planning to create a disturbance” in the state to tarnish West Bengal’s image.

Without naming BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari, Sukanta Majumder and Amitava Majumder who recently went to Delhi to meet RSS central leadership, the TMC supremo said: “As per the information I have got, these people, I do not want to take their names, went to Delhi recently to plan how they can defame Bengal. They love fake videos and fake news. They planned to divide society into caste and creeds. They will try to create division in minority community. They basically want to create a situation so that the West Bengal government can be shown in bad light.”
She claimed that the BJP has also planned to fund “any party that can divide the votes of the Trinamool Congress”.

The BJP, which brought the adjournment motion to discuss the violence during panchayat elections, however, staged a walkout of the Assembly after the chief minister mocked Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari over his win in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly polls. Adhikari, who was earlier with TMC, had defeated the CM in the Assembly polls.

After the BJP MLAs left the House, Banerjee continued to speak and said that BJP was spreading fake news on panchayat polls. “They (BJP leaders) are spreading fake news. Our police were attacked. Police personnel were shot. They (BJP) tried to kill a Block Development Officer. He (Suvendu) lost in his home district. After facing defeat, he spread violence in Khejuri, Tamluk and other areas. If we had rigged the election, how can the BJP win so many seats? We won in panchayat election because we worked for people. We won for our development work,” the chief minister said.

Banerjee claimed that West Bengal is “the best in the country in terms of law and order”. “I am just referring to a small sample. In the last one year in Rajasthan, 5,310 incidents of rape took place. In Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the incident of rapes are 2,769, 2,339 and 2,061 respectively. But in West Bengal, only 1,128 cases were reported,” she said.

“In terms of POCSO cases (cases of sexual assault among minors), Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh registered 6,898; 5,687 and 5,648, respectively. Whereas in West Bengal, it was only 2,657,” she said.

“BJP should not talk about law and order. Instead of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, they are burning girls. They instigate violence, they spread fake news. During their tenure, Manipur happens, accused of Bilkis Bano (rape) case are freed. Now, to divert attention, they are trying to defame Bengal. They are always anti-Bengal,” she added.
