Hitting out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Friday alleged that the party’s ministers were acting more as representatives of Adani Group and less as “public representatives”.
“The BJP ministers are acting less as representatives of the Indian people and more as representatives of the Adani Group. They have stopped paying attention to their ministries and are only focussed on defending the Adani group. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is shielding the Adani Group from a joint parliamentary committee (JPC). The entire Parliament was disrupted to save the Adani Group as its owner is a close friend of the Prime Minister,” said the Congress leader.
He also took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inspecting the work at the new Parliament site. “We want to know what is the point of going for an inspection there when parliamentary values are being crushed and democratic values are being destroyed. What is the objective of constructing a new Parliament building when the BJP has killed the soul of the parliamentary democracy in the country?” Gogoi added.
The Congress leader also criticised BJP leaders for relentlessly attacking party leader Rahul Gandhi. “Just because Rahul Gandhi asked tough questions, he is being targeted by the BJP leaders,” he said.
Neither the BJP nor the Adani Group reacted immediately to the Congress leader’s allegations.
The BJP’s stance on the issue has been that it has nothing to hide, with senior party leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently saying that “no one can accuse the Centre of crony capitalism.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was recently been disqualified from the Lok Sabha, a day after he was convicted in a defamation case by a Surat court on March 23.
A notice issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said he stood disqualified from the House from March 23, the day of his conviction. Rahul Gandhi has to now move a higher court and get his conviction stayed.
On Thursday (March 23), Gandhi was held guilty and sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 defamation case, over his remarks about the “Modi” surname.
The conviction triggered the process of his disqualification as a lawmaker.
