State allies till 2005,the Trinamool Congress and the BJP are now at crossroads with the latter accusing the Trinamool of physically assaulting its candidates. BJPs state unit lodged a formal complaint with the state Election Commission on Sunday after its candidate,Uma Shankar Ghosh Dastidar, was reportedly attacked in Salt Lake.
BJP state president Rahul Sinha said they have lodged a complaint with the EC about the attack on Dastidar by Trinamools Krishna Chakraborty and her supporters. According to the BJP,the Trinamool candidate along with her supporters ransacked a party meeting and assaulted the workers.
What CPM has not done in the last 34 years, the Trinamool is doing now. Is this the change we were expecting in West Bengal, said Sinha, adding that BJP secretary Smriti Irani went to the Biddhanagar North Police Station today and lodged a complained about the incident. Earlier, the Trinamool did not realise the strength of our party. Now they feel the BJP would get a definite share of votes, said Sinha, alleging that at various places, the partys flex and banners are being burnt or destroyed by the Trinamool.
A BJP delegation will meet the state election commission on Tuesday to discuss the issue.
A number of BJP national leaders, meanwhile, are expected to campaign for the civic polls. Smriti Irani participated in meetings at Salt Lake and Kharagpur today and is also expected to campaign in Kolkata Municipal Area on Monday. Cricketer-turned-MP Navjot Singh Sidhu will also visit the state on May 27.
The party has fielded 655 candidates across 81 municipalities in the state.
