The IMD on Friday warned of widespread rainfall across both south and north Bengal due to a low-pressure system which has developed into a depression. Scattered rainfall is expected to continue across south Bengal districts, including Kolkata for the next few days, it said. For the weekend most districts are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers with a high probability of gusty winds (30-40 kmph) and lightning across the region. Gusty winds and lightning are likely to remain, particularly in coastal and eastern districts like North & South 24 Parganas. Light to moderate rain is expected to occur at a few places on October 8 and 9. North Bengal faces a more severe weather warning, with the potential for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the weekend. Heavy to very heavy rain (7-20 cm) is likely to continue over Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar. Rainfall is expected to gradually decrease, but light to moderate rain will continue in the region. The heavy rainfall carries significant risks, including landslides in the hilly areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, severe waterlogging/inundation, and a rise in water levels in major rivers such as Teesta, Torsa, Raidak, and Jaldhaka.
