The state government has opposed the decision taken by the Medical Council of India to conduct common entrance test in a single language for admission to MBBS courses from 2013 onwards.
Dr Susanta Banerjee, director of medical education, said that they had earlier opposed the move of the MCI to conduct common entrance test in a single language and they will again meet with the representatives of MCI to discuss the matter.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) for admission of students to undergraduate courses in 335 medical colleges of the country is scheduled to be held on May 13 next year, the MCI officials said, even as the nod of the Ministry of Health in this connection is awaited.
The Council also uploaded the core syllabus on which the NEET-UG will be based and students can download the same from its website.
Meanwhile, the state governments decision to accept the single common entrance test for medical students is being opposed by the CPM-backed doctors organisation.
According to the members of the organisation,if the single entrance test is introduced, most of the students who are from West Bengal Board will face difficulty as their syllabus is different from that of CBSE. They also demanded that more seats be reserved for those passing from the state board. A member of the organisation said it was decided that 85 per cent seats would be reserved for those passing from West Bengal, but if students do not qualify, students from other states will be given preference.
He said students of Bengal would suffer if CET was introduced before the science syllabi of Higher Secondary Education Council is tuned to the all-India standard.
As the syllabus of physics, chemistry and biology in the intermediate level is not at par with the one followed by CBSE and ISC,students of West Bengal board will face difficulty in the exam. However, the TMC-backed Progressive Service Doctors Association, that had earlier opposed the common entrance test,is now in favour of it. It claimed that they would not oppose the common entrance test if the state government was allowed to conduct counselling.
