Rallying for Mamata DIDI

Fireworks lit Kolkata skyline as Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee began taking oath in Delhi. Hundreds of Trinamool supporters gathered at Metro Channel with a massive cutout of a train to celebrate Banerjee’s success.

Last time, when Banerjee became Railway Minister, celebrations were modest. This time, however, more than Rs 6,000 was spent on firecrackers alone. At her modest home on Harish Chatterjee Street,Banerjee’s relatives remained glued to television. Mamata’s octogenarian mother Gayatri Devi and brothers and sisters-in-law watched the proceeding with rapt attention.

“I am feeling good and happy. But now it is time for my daughter to work for her country and her state. I want her to make sure that she reaches out to the poorer sections of the society,” said Devi.

Trinamool chief’s sisters-in-law hope to see her as the next chief minister of the state. “Today is an important day for us. Thirty-two years of CPM oppression has been enough,” said Kartik Banerjee, her brother.
