The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) on Tuesday cleared the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)’s in-principle approval to declare Kumbhalgarh as a tiger reserve.

The NTCA had given its in-principle approval on August 4. MoEFCC minister Bhupender Yadav said on Tuesday, “This significant step towards wildlife conservation promises a brighter future for tigers and biodiversity in Rajasthan. The move will boost employment opportunities for the people of the region through ecotourism.”

Rajsamand MP and NTCA member Diya Kumari, who had been working to get Kumbhalgarh declared a tiger reserve, said, “Today is a historic day for Mewar and I express my immense gratitude to the honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and the Union Minister Bhupender Yadav ji for giving a green signal to this project.”

“This is one project where I have dedicated my full efforts to bring it on ground despite many impediments. I am happy that the Union Government today has given in-principle approval and now we can hope that Kumbhalgarh will soon become a tiger reserve. Tiger roaming once again in Mewar was a dream for most of the people and now we are just one step away from realising that dream,” she said.

The proposed Kumbhalgarh reserve will be spread over around 2,800 sq kms. The Technical Committee, while recommending the approval for the proposal, has stated that the state government is to submit the updated proposal indicating the core buffer and eco-sensitive zone, along with the land use.
