Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being absent from the all-party meeting held following the terrorist attack against tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

Addressing the crowd at a ‘Save the Constitution’ rally at Jaipur, Kharge said, “Every Congress leader and party worker is with the government in the fight against terror activities on our land. But it is unfortunate that when the all-party meeting was called, representatives from every party were present, except for PM Modi. He was busy giving election speeches in Bihar…”

He also criticised the BJP for its “obsession” with the Congress. “BJP has been using CBI, ED, and Income Tax officials to harass the Opposition. They raided more than 200 individuals’ homes, but only 1% were punished. BJP is obsessed with Congress, although we have been out of power (at the Centre) for 11 years. Modi should work for the upliftment of people and leave behind petty politics,” Kharge said.

Senior Rajasthan Congress leaders were also present at the Ramlila Maidan for the event. Addressing the gathering, state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasara took aim at the Centre over the security situation in the country. Congress leaders also raised the issue of the law and order situation in Rajasthan.

Sachin Pilot accused the BJP of trying to destroy the Constitution. “They have weakened the Election Commission of the country and have been using various government agencies to silence the Opposition’s voice. Hence, we have organised this campaign to raise awareness in people regarding the safety of the Constitution.”

All the senior Congress leaders raised the Pahalgam attack, rising cost of living, unemployment, and the alleged misuse of government machinery by the BJP.

Kharge said, “The majority of welfare schemes in the country were introduced by the Congress party, whether it is MGNREGA, MSP, or green revolution. The BJP has not done anything new for the country. Modi has brought inflation and unemployment. He used to talk about his ‘56-inch’ chest. Now it has shrunk.”

Pilot and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot called out the BJP for not taking action against the MLA Balmukund Acharya, who allegedly entered a mosque in the city and shouted derogatory slogans.

A day before the Kharge rally, BJP had expelled former MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja, who sprinkled Gangajal at a temple after Congress leader Tikaram Jully, a Dalit man, visited the temple.
