The supervisor of a welfare home for boys in Hyderabad was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting at least two minor children who were in his care.
While two of the children and their parents have approached the Hyderabad police, officials of the Women and Child Welfare Department said further enquiries have revealed that two more children could have been sexually assaulted by the same person.
The alleged assault came to light when one of the boys went home for Dussehra holidays and reported his plight to his mother. The mother filed a police complaint, leading to the accused’s detention on Monday. He was formally arrested on Tuesday.
“During the Dussehra holidays, the boy, who is about 10 years of age, went back home. Though he was supposed to return to the welfare home a few days later, he refused to go back. When his mother insisted, he cried and told her about being sexually abused,” Inspector B Chandra Mohan told The Indian Express. “Later, the mother approached us and lodged a complaint,” the inspector said.
Police have booked a criminal case against the supervisor under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused has been the caretaker of the home since 2022, officials of the Women and Child Welfare Department told The Indian Express. “There were no prior complaints about him. The only complaint was that he was too ‘harsh’ with the boys,” a senior official of the department said.
The state government on Tuesday ordered an inquiry into the allegations.
The welfare home has around 70 children between seven and 18 years of age, department officials said.
