The teaser release of Razakar movie, a period drama around events in Nizam’s Hyderabad before it acceded to the Indian Union in 1948, has stirred up a hornet’s nest on social media. The teaser of the film, which claims to be based on true stories, shows atrocities allegedly committed by Razakars against Hindus in their pursuit of spreading Islam and establishing ‘Turkistan’.

Telangana Minister K T Rama Rao (KTR) was quick to share his response. “Some intellectually bankrupt jokers of the BJP are doing their best to instigate communal violence and polarisation for their political propaganda in Telangana. We will take up the matter with the censor board and also the Telangana police to ensure that the law & order situation of Telangana is not affected,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

He was responding to a social media user who requested the minister to stop the release of the “fake propaganda movie” in order to maintain peace and tranquillity in Hyderabad and Telangana. The X user claimed even the teaser is creating hatred between communities.

Razakars, meaning volunteers, were a private militia under Qasim Razvi, president of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (founded in 1927), who used strong-arm tactics against people to ensure Hyderabad remained an independent state during the turmoil that followed after the Independence of India. The Razakars reportedly had the backing of Nizam’s government and influential landlords who wanted to crush the peasant uprising post-1946. Razvi, who was arrested and imprisoned for a decade after Operation Polo in 1948, was allowed to migrate to Pakistan in 1957.

The teaser of the movie, bankrolled by BJP leader Gudur Narayana Reddy, was released Sunday evening. Present at the event, suspended BJP leader and Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh called it an excellent film and drew parallels to The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story which, according to him, brought out facts and spread awareness. He urged people to help promote awareness nationwide of the sacrifices behind Hyderabad’s liberation and contribute to its success.

Former state BJP chief and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar shared the teaser with a post on X. He said “Literally Goosebumps watching the trailer of the movie Razakar… Current generations should know about the struggles of the Hyderabad Liberation. Let’s engage with history even as their pseudo-intellectuals try to erase it.”

Responding to him, Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader Dasoju Sravan said: “Being a member of Parliament, it is unbecoming and unacceptable of Mr @bandisanjay_bjp to even welcome #RazakarTeaser which is aimed at raking up a wound that is healed several decades ago…”

Sravan added that the Razakar movie was “being produced and promoted as a criminal conspiracy to destroy social tranquillity; to foster hatred and divisive atmosphere and also to contaminate the very social fabric of #GangaJamunaThehazib in Telangana and Hyderabad…”

Sravan asked Sanjay Kumar to study the factual history behind the Telangana Armed Struggle. “Are you ready to debate who was behind the Razakars? Are you ready to discuss the brutal and barbaric role of our so-called landlords and rulers of Gadis and Samstahnams during the times of Razakar atrocities? Are you ready to discuss the atrocities and violence that occurred even after the era of Razakars?” he asked.

Sanjay Kumar, however, quickly shot back at KTR. “First they backtrack on their promise to celebrate Liberation Day… Now when the realities of Razakars are shown, #TwitterTillu or #XTillu has a problem. This is just a trailer. On the Hindu festival of #GaneshChaturthi, he didn’t even care to convey greetings but instead decided to attack a movie that has shown Hindu genocide by Razakar. Let’s all pray to Lord Ganesha to instil some sense into #Tillu instead of engaging in futile attempts to erase history,” he said.
