(File)More than 3000 persons were caught drunk driving in Hyderabad on New Year’s Eve with most cases being booked between 1 am and 4 am, the police said.
As per the data gathered from the FIRs registered with Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda police commissionerate, a total of 1,241, 1,243 and 517 drunk driving cases were registered respectively during the new year festivities.
The police said all those booked are being produced in the court and their driver’s licences were sent to the Road Transport Authority for suspension under The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

In case of four-wheelers, while Hyderabad and Rachakonda police registered cases against 135 and 76 persons respectively, as many as 275 cases were registered in Cyberabad.
Thirteen minors were caught driving under the influence.
Avinash Mohanty, the Cyberabad police commissioner, attributed the accident-free New Year’s celebrations in the city to the special drive against drunk driving.
The police initiated a special crackdown on drunk driving before New Year’s Eve, setting up barricades across the city from 8 pm. This led to tense exchanges between citizens and law enforcement at various locations. Cyberabad alone recorded over 150 motorists with a blood alcohol content (BAC) exceeding 200 mg/100 ml, well beyond the permissible limit of less than 30 mg/100 ml.
