Six days after a leopard caused a scare at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad, the wild cat was finally captured in the early hours of Friday, officials said.

The male leopard was trapped in one of the cages set up by the forest officials and a rescue team from the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad will examine the animal, they said.

Keeping the sensitivity and importance of human lives in the airport area, efforts were further intensified by placing additional cages and camera traps, said Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and chief wildlife warden Mohan Chandra Pargaien.

The leopard will be kept under observation in the Hyderabad Zoo where he will undergo a health checkup, following which the wild cat will be released in the forest a few days later, he added.

According to the forest department, teams from the forest department and RGIA have been working tirelessly for six days to trace and trap the animal that caused sleepless nights.

After failing to trap the leopard initially, the department increased the number of cages with bait from three to five. The number of camera traps was increased from five to 20 and installed at important points. The residents of nearby localities were alerted and cautioned against venturing out alone at night.
