Within 100 days, seven persons have been given death penalty in rape cases in Surat, Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi told the state legislature on Saturday.

Speaking on the training of women under the state government’s “Suraksha Setu” programme, Sanghavi said, “Compared to Ahmedabad, such incidents are more in Surat city. In Ahmedabad, these incidents are under control. In order to immediately control these incidents in Surat, this year within 100 days, seven people have been given death penalty. In the entire country, no other state has given justice in so many consecutive cases.”

The minister was replying to a supplementary question asked by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar during the Question Hour.
“Compared to the last 10 years, crime against women in Gujarat is the lowest this year,” Sanghavi said adding that in the last two years, 14.76 lakh girls have received training under this programme in the state.

Taking about the success cases, the minister narrated how a woman who was previously trained under the Suraksha Setu had defended herself against a sexual assault attempt that took place on a train from Chandigarh to Ahmedabad.

“The woman had stated this in her report filed with the police,” Sanghavi added.
