DU plans to make sports must in UG course

Delhi University (DU) has proposed to make a few classes for sports compulsory as part of its four-year undergraduate programme that will be introduced next year.

Delhi University (DU) has proposed to make a few classes for sports compulsory as part of its four-year undergraduate programme that will be introduced next year. DU Sports Council chairman Prof. C S Dubey said one or two classes for sports every week could be made compulsory for students of the four-year under-graduate programme.

“We are working on a sport-for-all policy. A student will get around 16 weeks in one semester. During that period, two classes every week will be reserved for sporting activities. The modalities have to be worked out and the proposal has to be approved by the vice-chancellor and the Academic Council,” Dubey said.

The idea, university officials said, was to encourage students to take up sports. “Sports will be part of a student’s curriculum. Apart from sports quota students, others can get training in any sport for which coaching is available in his college. Based on his level of performance, students will get credit points for his degree,” he said.

He said a committee has been formed to look into the proposal. “There were around six committees that were set up around December last year,” he said.

Dr Meera Sood, secretary of the Delhi University Sports Council, said: “Three committees had been set up to look at the nature of fitness tests, the marking criteria and on the admission procedure for sports quota.”
