This group of five friends had tried to steal cars on several occasions, but unsuccessfully. On January 20,they tried again, and ended up murdering a 17-year-old.
The Gurgaon police have arrested five persons for allegedly murdering Abhishek, from Sankho village in Bahadurgarh, and burning his body. To cover their trail, they threw the victims clothes in a pond and abandoned the vehicle in Sonepat, after making alterations in its number plate, police said.
The accused have been identified as Ashwini,Pankaj,Praveen,Rupesh and Navin.
According to police, the five waylaid Abhisheks Santro car while he was passing through the national highway in Bahadurgarh. After pushing him to the side, they commandeered the vehicle and drove it down the road. Their plan, however, went haywire when the victim recognised Ashwini,a local resident. Scared that he may identify them,Naveen and Pankaj allegedly shot him twice.
Later, they drove to Daryapur in Delhi and, after finding a vacant site, they burnt his body. They threw Abhisheks clothes and belongings in a nearby pond, said DCP (East) Maheshwar Dayal.
Though police found the charred body, they kept it in the mortuary because it could not be immediately identified. Meanwhile,as Abhishek remained missing, villagers protested and demanded that police investigate his disappearance.
Haryana DGP R S Dalal ordered an inquiry into the incident, and transferred the case to the Crime Branch. Special teams were constituted to crack the case.
The case was solved when the gang decided to rob another vehicle near Palam Vihar on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off,police arrested the five. They were later found to be involved in Abhisheks murder. Based on information procured from them, police also found the Santro car.
Abhishek,an only child, was studying at a technical college in Bahadurgarh.
