Young & educated top list of drink driving offenders

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg said: “We are not only focusing on strengthening the drive against drink driving,but are also in the process of making our study report that will include the credentials of the offenders. The aim is to identify to which section of the society do maximum offenders belong to.”

Police will be looking at the qualification,age group,gender and type of vehicle of the offenders. The make of the vehicle,police said,will help ascertain the economic section of the offenders.

“These details will help understand the trend at present. The study might be useful in future changing times,” Garg said.

The recent survey found of the students caught driving under influence,482 had studied only till Class X,2,018 offenders were found highly qualified.

“It is a misconception that qualified people obey rules. This survey has proved that the qualified lot is the most undisciplined when it comes to abiding by the rules. This group reads about fatal accidents caused due to drink driving and participates in awareness programmes,but,ironically,are the top on the list of offenders of drink driving,” a Traffic official said.

It was also found that among the offenders most were two-wheeler riders. A total of 14,839 people were caught for drink driving this year till August 15. Of these,at least 8,356 were two-wheeler riders.

“Most offenders are youngsters who often goes out for late night parties and speed on roads,leading to the most tragic accidents,” the official said.

Of the total number of prosecutions this year,5,137 were car drivers,374 were in LGVs,217 in delivery vans,32 in charter buses,2 schoolbus drivers,307 TSRs,234
