Work damages lines,no water in E Delhi

Due to heavy construction work, two of the city’s main water supply lines running from the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant suffered damages in the last week.

Due to heavy construction work, two of the city’s main water supply lines running from the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant suffered damages in the last week, leading to disruption of supply in East Delhi.

According to DJB officials, heavy encroachment over their pipelines is leading to cracks and ‘settling’ of the concrete pipelines. On Friday,a stretch of road had caved in on Vikas Marg.

“The earth had settled due to a crack in the main pipeline. The pipelines are made of concrete, and a breach in the joint in the Jal Vihar main line, which runs parallel to the GK line, had gone unnoticed. While the GK main line was repaired on Saturday, the issue with the Jal Vihar main line surfaced,” said R K Garg,DJB. This led to another road caving in on Saturday, barely two km from the earlier spot,at the Mandir Marg crossing.

“A transformer has been installed over the pipeline. Repair work becomes difficult. Work is on in full swing. We are doubtful of the supply in morning, but it will be restored by Monday evening,” Garg said.

While several areas in East Delhi reported restoration of supply by Sunday evening, many were still hit by the crisis. “There has been no water supply for the last three days here. If we do not get supply by Monday morning,we will be forced to take to the streets,” said Mathu Kutty,a local resident.
