A 42-year-old woman from Uttam Nagar has died of swine flu in the capital, the first H1N1 death this year. The woman was admitted at a private hospital in north Delhi. “The woman died on Tuesday evening,” Dr Charan Singh, the state government’s swine flu nodal officer, said.

Eight fresh H1N1 cases were reported on Wednesday, taking the number of people in the city diagnosed with the virus to 22 so far this year. Among the fresh cases are three women (from Madangir, Sangam Vihar and Greater Kailash I) and five men (from JNU campus, Laxmi Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Masjid Moth and Chhattarpur). Two of them are being treated at Safdarjung hospital; the rest at private hospitals.

Health experts warned that swine flu cases could rise as the disease spreads through the air and not through a vector, as in dengue.

“Elderly people, diabetics, those with kidney problems, cancer patients and pregnant women are at risk, and thus should get themselves vaccinated and take common precautions like washing hands properly, avoiding crowded places and wearing masks,” a Health department official said.“H1N1 influenza spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing or through touch. The medicine generally prescribed for the disease is Tamiflu, which must be taken only on a doctor’s prescription,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the Health department has started an orientation programme for staff of all the 22 designated hospitals and directed them to follow the Health ministry guidelines for treatment of swine flu.
