Amid mounting charges of corruption in projects works related to the Commonwealth Games, the government has rejected demands for the creation of a high-powered committee to oversee the preparations, saying it would not serve any purpose.
Answering questions in the Rajya Sabha,Sports Minister M S Gill said changing horses midstream would only prove to be detrimental.
If I have understood anything in my long administrative career,it is that committees dont serve much purpose. If more committees could solve the problem,we can have not one but ten. But that is not the solution, he said.
But he promised to look into each case of alleged corruption and punish the guilty.
The Rajya Sabha witnessed high-voltage drama on the Games, following a short notice question posed by BJP MP Prakash Javdekar, during which several members, including CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat and former sports ministers Mani Shanker Aiyar and Vikram Verma demanded the creation of an apex committee to oversee the preparations for the Games.
Aiyar,Gills predecessor, went to the extent of saying that the Group of Ministers for the Commonwealth Games had failed patently in delivering an untainted Games.
Gill said the government was taking note of all corruption charges and would have them examined by appropriate authorities.
The government must and will take note. I will certainly write to the highest authorities, such as Finance (Ministry) and others,to look into any complaint that comes in. There are other agencies as well. The CVC is to do certain things. I am in touch with other officers on other matters. As far as I am concerned, agencies like CAG must also speed up and catch whoever is guilty, Gill said.
