A 38-year-old wife of a jeweller was robbed and murdered at her home in Mayur Vihar Phase-III,East Delhi,on Thursday afternoon.
Police said the assailants,suspected to be five in number,had gone to the womans house posing as courier boys.
The woman has been identified as Madhubala Gupta,whose husband,Ajay Gupta,runs a jewellery business in Kondli. At the time of the incident,Madhubala and her two children nine-year-old daughter Himashi and 14-year-old son Himanshu were at home,police said.
The incident,police said,was reported around 3.30 pm from flat no. 31 in Pocket-A.
According to police,one of the assailants went to the house posing as a courier boy. As soon as Madhubala answered the door,the assailant and four others forcefully entered the house.
Based on the statements given by Madhubalas children,police said the three were held hostage at knife-point,while the house was ransacked.
When Madhubala tried to resist,she was smothered and locked into a room with her children. The men then decamped with cash and silver jewellery worth several lakhs of rupees, a senior police officer said.
A neighbour,who heard the childrens cries for help,made a PCR call.
Madhubala was rushed to Metro Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival,police said.
Police said there were no external injury marks on Madhubalas body.
Police said the exact nature of injuries on Madhubala will be ascertained only after a post-mortem examination.
A case of robbery and murder has been registered at the New Ashok Nagar police station.
