Upset over illness and hospital bills, Delhi man dies by suicide in hotel room

In his note, the deceased mentioned that he underwent an operation for haemorrhoids and other ailments but he didn’t recover and was in “pain”.

Upset over his prolonged illness and treatment cost, a 24-year-old man checked into a hotel room in Northwest Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar and allegedly died by suicide Wednesday.

Police said the man, identified as Nitesh Kumar, died of oxygen toxicity. He left a purported suicide note, stating that he was “upset” over his treatment cost and didn’t wish to burden his family.

DCP (Northwest) Jitendra Meena said, “The man had booked the room on Monday around 5 pm. On Wednesday, when he didn’t respond to staff calling him, they informed us. We reached the hotel and broke the room door as it was locked from the inside. The man was found dead. We also recovered a suicide note from the room.”

The deceased earlier worked as a security guard for three-four months but later left his job. In his note, he mentioned that he underwent an operation for haemorrhoids and other ailments but he didn’t recover and was in “pain”. He stated he was “upset” over his prolonged illness and didn’t want his parents to spend more money on him.

Nitesh lived with his parents and a younger sister in Model Town. The family said they were not aware of his plan or that he was staying at a hotel and did not lodge a missing person report.

Police said no foul play is suspected so far and they are questioning family and friends. Hotel staff have also been summoned for questioning.
