A 28-year-old undertrial lodged at Rohini Jail was killed in a fight that occurred within its premises on Wednesday night,police said.
The victim has been identified as Raju,a resident of JJ Colony in Bawana. He succumbed to injuries suffered in a fight in Rohini Jail on Wednesday night, said Chhaya Sharma,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer). Raju had been lodged in the jail for the past 14 months for his alleged involvement in cases of theft and robbery registered at the Model Town police station.
According to the police,prima facie investigation suggested that the victim had got involved in a fight with another prisoner. Raju had been produced at the Rohini Court on Wednesday morning,where he made a nuisance of himself. He hurled abuses at one of the witnesses in the case and the judge directed that he should,in the future,be produced in handcuffs, said a senior police officer.
Soon after he returned to the jail,he was found lying injured inside the jail complex around 11 pm. Though he was taken to a nearby hospital,he succumbed to his injuries. His body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to the Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital,police said,adding that the Metropolitan Magistrates report is awaited.
