An undertrial inmate died allegedly by suicide after hanging himself in Tihar prison’s hospital ward, authorities confirmed on Monday.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered, an officer said.
“On the morning of July 14, Ramesh Karmakar, 46, was found hanging in the general ward of the hospital. The CCTV footage of the incident has been preserved, and an inquiry has been initiated under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS),” the officer added.
Karmakar was taken into custody on April 22 for allegedly killing his partner after she threatened to expose him to his wife..
Soon after, he began complaining of vertigo along with pain in his right ear and decreased hearing, said authorities.
He was subsequently admitted to the hospital premises on May 28, said officials. He was also consulting the Neurology department at GB Pant Hospital and the ENT department in Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital. He used to work as housekeeping staff in hotels and restaurants, said police.
