Underpass, flyover: PWD proposes traffic solution for two key roads

After the feasibility study is done, officials said, the department will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) — which will include the budget and estimated time of completion — and send it to senior officials and the PWD Minister for final approval.To decongest two prominent stretches that see heavy traffic snarls, especially during peak hours, the Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to construct an underpass at Shadipur Depot in Central Delhi and an elevated corridor on Desh Bandhu Gupta Road in Northwest Delhi.
According to officials, the department has floated tenders for conducting a feasibility study, which is done to assess the traffic situation, the number of vehicles that use the stretch daily, if there are any underground and elevated Metro lines that are passing through, how much it will cost, etc.
After the feasibility study is done, officials said, the department will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) — which will include the budget and estimated time of completion — and send it to senior officials and the PWD Minister for final approval.
“Both these arterial stretches offer connectivity to the Central part of Delhi. The Shadipur Depot intersection connects the PUSA Institute on one side… and on the other side, it connects the busy Karol Bagh Market Road, Rajendra Place, Jhandewalan, Paharganj, and Ajmeri Gate… There have been a lot of complaints from the public regarding traffic on these stretches,” said a PWD official.
Officials said that as it is a busy stretch surrounded by crowded markets, coaching centres, and railway stations, it sees both pedestrian traffic and slow-moving vehicles.
The situation is similar on Desh Bandh Gupta Road, which is heavily congested throughout the day. This stretch also sees frequent movement of e-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws, which adds to traffic congestion and slows down vehicular movement.
“The tendering process will take about a month or two, after which the work will be awarded to an agency for the study… which will prepare the DPR in one year… It will also conduct a cost-benefit analysis by taking into account the economic, environmental and social costs in implementing the scheme,” said the official.
