Life had always been difficult for 23-year-old Umesh Kant Pandey.

Life had always been difficult for 23-year-old Umesh Kant Pandey. As a computer graduate,Umesh was the most educated among his siblings and the only one in the family to hold a full-time job that paid a decent salary of Rs 8,000 per month.

He married around four months ago and was the main breadwinner in the family of mother Ramrati Pandey (50),father Raj Kishore Pandey, brother Dinesh, who is physically challenged, and another brother Rishi, who works at an export house in Manesar.

Umesh had come to Gurgaon from Reva,Madhya Pradesh, and was working as an attendant at the Kherki Dhaula toll plaza on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. He was shot dead around midnight on Friday by a commuter, who took exception to being asked to show his car documents.

The two accused in the case have been arrested.

Officials of DS Constructions (DSC),the concessionaire of the toll plaza, visited Umesh’s village on Monday to give his family an initial compensation sum of Rs 50,000.

“Everything has changed after my brother’s death. My father and mother live here alone with my physically challenged brother. Umesh was the only substantial earner in the family. I do not know how we will manage in the future,” said Rishi, who has studied till Class VIII. Rishi is in Reva for Umesh’s last rites.

Spokesperson for Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway Limited said on Monday that the company has been in close touch with Umesh’s family. DSC Limited, meanwhile, has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for Umesh’s family.

“As all our employees are insured as per company policy,we are speedily processing the insurance claims so that the additional Rs 3 lakh of insurance money could be made available to the family at the earliest. Apart from providing the total monetary compensation of Rs 8 lakh,we are also considering the option of offering employment to Umesh’s brother,if he is eligible and interested,” said the spokesperson.

Rishi, however, said he is yet to receive any call regarding a job offer. “I have not been told about any job offer. But if it is a government job,I will take it up. Doing a private company job will be difficult for me. Now,I have to take care of my family,” he said.

He said DSC has offered pension to both his parents as per Umesh’s salary.

Rishi plans to stay in Reva till all the rituals are over. “I will start thinking about the future after the rituals are done in 13 days,” he said Rishi.

Officials, who visited Umesh’s village, said even basic amenities are missing in the area.
