Two men shot at in Tilak Nagar, different versions puzzle police

Some eyewitnesses told police the shopkeepers were attacked for stopping the assailants from passing comments at women customers.

Two shopkeepers were shot at by armed men in West Delhi’s Vishnu Garden on Monday and eyewitnesses gave conflicting versions of what led to the firing, police said.

Some eyewitnesses told police the shopkeepers were attacked for stopping the assailants from passing comments at women customers. Others at the spot, however, said the two men were shot at for stopping the attackers from performing stunts on their bikes in the market. Police are verifying both versions.

The shopkeepers — Sachin Walicha (55), a restaurant owner, and Akshay Sharma (23), the owner of a shop that sells pizza — are out of danger, police said. The incident took place a kilometre away from the Tilak Nagar police station.

According to one version, at least five persons on motorcycles came to the market and started passing lewd comments at women customers. When Walicha and Sharma objected, an argument followed and the bikers called some friends, who arrived with pistols and opened fire.

Walicha and Sharma were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital.

“We received a PCR call around 8 pm and a police team was rushed to the spot. We have identified four-five persons and registered an FIR against them. Others involved in the incident would be arrested soon. We have already recovered a vehicle used by them,” Ranvir Singh, DCP (Southwest Delhi), said. “We cannot reveal the vehicle owner’s name as it would hamper investigations.”

Police have, however, not registered a case of molestation yet. “We have not registered a case of molestation so far as no woman has come forward with such a complaint, but an investigation is on into the allegation,” Singh said.

Suresh, Walicha’s younger brother, said, “We have provided CCTV footage and a bullet to police, and hope that all the people involved in the incident would be arrested soon.”

He alleged there were more than eight people carrying guns when his brother stopped them from molesting a woman. “My brother sustained a bullet injury in his hand but he is out of danger now,” he said.
