Two from Africa held for Net fraud

Police on Monday arrested two foreign nationals for allegedly hacking the internet password of a bank account of a company and siphoning off Rs 16 lakh from the account.

Police on Monday arrested two foreign nationals for allegedly hacking the internet password of a bank account of a company and siphoning off Rs 16 lakh from the account. The accused,identified as Evans Ukah Mendi and William Tambo,are from Africa.

Ashok Chand,Deputy Commissioner of Police,said,The racketeers,after hacking the internet password of the account,used the money to purchase goods through online shopping websites. They mainly purchased perfumes,shoes,mobile phones and other such items. The online shopping companies grew suspicious after receiving transactions of such large amounts from the same address and stopped delivery of consignment.

The incident came to light after a resident of Civil Lines found that Rs 16 lakh was transferred from his companys bank account through netbanking without any information. He then lodged a police complaint and a case was registered.

It was later found that the address given by the accused to the companies for delivery of consignment was fake. When the delivery boy fails to locate the bogus address,the racketeers would ask him to come to a location of their choice,from where they would collect the consignment, the DCP added.

A trap was laid by the police and a dummy parcel was handed over to the delivery man. When the delivery man contacted the accused,he was asked to come near Jhandu Singh Marg,from where the two were arrested. Evans Ukah Mendi,a Cameroon national,came to India in 2008 on a student visa and is a computer expert. William Tambo,is a South African living in India since the last two years,had entered India illegally through the Nepal border.

A laptop,a fake South African passport with fake Indian visa were recovered from the two.
