Both suspects are reportedly connected to gangster Chenu Pehelwan, said officers.
According to police, a firing incident was reported at Seelampur police station around 10.40 pm on Thursday. A police team reached the spot near Jama Masjid, Seelampur, where they found Misbah lying injured. He was taken to JPC Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Investigators said the accused fired more than a dozen rounds at the victim before fleeing on a motorcycle.
Police said forensic teams examined the crime scene and recovered several bullet shells. During the preliminary inquiry, police said, it was found that Misbah was involved in seven criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, robbery, and offences under the Arms Act. He had recently been released from jail on bail. Police suspect the murder is linked to ongoing gang rivalries in Northeast Delhi.
“The incident appears to be a fallout of a gang rivalry. With the help of CCTV footage, we have identified two suspects and arrested them. They are connected to their boss, Chenu,” a senior officer said.
The shooting took place close to the residence of Hashim Baba, a notorious gangster who has been lodged in Tihar Jail since 2019. Baba, once a key player in the network of gangster Abdul Nasir, was allegedly involved in activities ranging from extortion and contract killings to illegal betting.
According to police sources, Baba later became associated with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who sought to expand his influence in Delhi through Baba’s network. Baba allegedly controlled a significant arms supply chain in the NCR and had links with influential businessmen and locals in Northeast Delhi.
Baba was also named in the murder of a gym owner in Greater Kailash in September 2024, a case in which his wife, Zoya Khan, was arrested last year.
He had earlier been accused of orchestrating a 2016 shooting at Karkardooma court to eliminate rival — Chenu. In 2019, the Crime Branch had registered a case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against Baba and the Abdul Nasir gang.
